The OH-58D was Bell's answer to the U.S. Army's request for a digital platform to aid new artillery. Originally unarmed as part of the Army Helicopter Improvement Program, the OH-58D was based on the OH-58C. It was, however, a completely new helicopter, featuring a four-blade main rotor, a more powerful engine, a multifunction display, and a Mast Mounted Sight (MMS). The MMS was the basis for the upgrade, using a Television System, Thermal Imaging System, and Laser Rangefinder/Designator. The helicopter's success led to the decision to arm it with two hard points capable of holding either .50-caliber machine guns, seven-shot rocket pods, Air-to-Air Stingers, or Hellfire missiles. This book takes a detailed look at the Kiowa Warrior with more than 200 color photos, color profiles, and detailed line drawings.
